Description
Another in a series of atypical 2008 vintage Mortlach casks from Signatory. Though unlike the last several, which have tended towards a vivacious fruitiness, this one is much more so emblematic of its cask – perhaps even more so than of its distillery. While it is certainly malt-led, the 1st Fill Bourbon Barrel delivers waves of oak, vanilla, and baking spice notes. Beyond that is a bouquet of complexity: floral notes intermingled with peach and pear, wet grass and damp wood, nougat, cinnamon, and caramel.
It is no weighty, dense Mortlach nor is it one of the light bright affairs Signatory has brought lately. It is something in between: creamy, rich, and complex.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Malt. Damp wood. Fruit-scented dish soap. Peaches and cream. Peach ring candies. Bourbon. Wet grass.
Taste: Malt-led. Chewy. Nougat. Spiced - cinnamon and clove. Caramel. Spring flowers.
Finish: Gentle baking spices. Bitter oak. Vanilla cream. Pear popsicle.
