If you want to talk about popular alcohols, cognac is always going to be near the top of the list. Cognac is one of those drinks that has a certain air of sophistication about it.  Maison Hennessy is the world’s most popular cognac, and for a good reason.

For one, Hennessy has been around for centuries, so people have had plenty of time to fall in love with its flavor. But Hennessy also has a great marketing strategy, which has helped it become a household name all over the world.

The History Of Cognac And How It Became So Popular

Cognac is a type of Brandy that is made in the Cognac region of France. It is typically made from a blend of grapes, including Ugni Blanc, Colombard, and Folle Blanche. The wine is distilled twice and then put into oak barrels to age.

Cognac became popular in the early 1800s when it was used by British officers as a ration while they were fighting in the French army. Production began in the early 17th century, and by the 18th century, it was one of France’s most popular exports.

Cognac is a type of brandy that is made in the Cognac region of France and named after the town of Cognac. It has been around for centuries and has been enjoyed by kings, presidents, and other dignitaries worldwide.

This distinctive type of brandy has a rich and fascinating past that is well worth exploring. Cognac is popular all over the world, and for a good reason – it’s a delicious drink with a complex flavor that can be enjoyed on its own or in cocktails. Cognac has a long and interesting history, and it’s no wonder that it has become such a popular spirit.

These days, cognac is enjoyed by people all over the world, and it can be found in bars and liquor stores everywhere. There are many different types of cognac available, and each one has its own unique flavor profile. If you’re looking for a unique spirit to add to your collection, cognac is definitely worth considering.

Maison Hennessy’s Unique Production Process

Cognac is made by using grape brandy to fill casks made from oak trees that are cut down in specific regions of France. These casks are encased in metal or wood for their protection which facilitates transportation. When making grape brandy, grapes are first crushed then fermented before being distilled. Currently, around 600 people work in Maison Hennessy’s cognac production for the sole purpose of making great grape brandies to be used for cognac.

Maison Hennessy only has one key ingredient; grapes (a single grape brandy), for its cognacs. This is because people who work at Maison Hennessy know that to make the best cognac, it begins with one ingredient; grapes. The next step in making Maison Hennessy’s unique quality products involves distilling the grape brandy twice before aging it in oak casks.

There are several processes behind this theory of double distillation and long aging period. When spirits are distilled twice, there is a greater concentration of alcohol than the original mixture. During the second distillation process, water evaporates, which leaves more alcohol (sugar) behind to be aged longer in oak casks, thus creating flavors that cannot otherwise be made by using only one distillation process.

Oak casks are extremely important to the entire cognac-making process because natural molecules such as vanillin (an organic component) and lactones (a type of aromatic compound made from fruit juices and plant oils) are found in these casks to add unique flavors to grape brandy.

Maison Hennessy uses a double distillation and long aging tradition that has been handed down over generations since it was founded by Jean-Baptiste Vincent Hennessy. Because it takes approximately ten years to create casks, Maison Hennessy has close relationships with several cooperages cognac oak barrel makers in France, so they can meet their orders for creating casks.

The Different Types Of Cognac That Maison Hennessy Produces

Hennessy Pure White (also known as Blanche)

This type of cognac is un-aged. It derives its color from being twice distilled in copper stills – which are considered to provide a more delicate flavor than their stainless steel counterparts. As with all unaged spirits, it is best served very cold.

Hennessy Fine de Cognac

This type of cognac is aged for a period of between 2-5 years. Additionally, unlike the more common VS or VSOP grades of cognac that are aged in used barrels, this variety derives its color from being aged entirely in new French oak barrels. The result is a slightly lighter-colored spirit with hints of vanilla flavors. It tends to be best enjoyed neat – especially if you have chilled it well before serving.

Hennessy XO (also known as Exception)

This type of cognac has been aged for at least six years in Limousin oak casks which are made from wood cuttings left over from the wine industry – making them far more costly than standard barrels. It is then blended to achieve a particularly mellow and rounded flavor. As with Fine de Cognac, it too tends to be best enjoyed neat or with just a few small ice cubes

Hennessy Privilege

This type of cognac has been aged for at least 15 years before being bottled – but only the very best casks are selected for this special blend. The result is a spirit that can be drunk neat, on the rocks or mixed in an after-dinner drink.

Hennessy Paradis Imperial

This type of cognac is crystal clear as it has been filtered through charcoal made from precious woods such as sandalwood and silver fir trees. As each one of these trees has up to 30 years before they can be harvested – it’s not a process that can be rushed.

It is then aged for an additional two years in Limousin oak casks. The result is a highly refined cognac that has only subtle hints of vanilla and almonds.

Hennessy Richard

This type of cognac was created in honor of the former CEO who developed the Paradis Imperial product range. It spends at least 20 years aging in Limousin oak casks before being filtered through charcoal made from precious woods such as sandalwood and silver fir trees.

As with Paradis Imperial, it too tends to be best enjoyed neat or on the rocks after you have chilled it well beforehand.

Hennessy Very Special (VS)

This type of cognac has been aged for at least four years in Limousin oak casks. It derives its flavor from being distilled twice – once like any other type of cognac and then again through a special process called “crystallization premiere.”

This ensures that it is at its very best when it reaches the consumer. As with many other types of cognac, it too tends to be best enjoyed neat or on the rocks after you have chilled it well beforehand.

Hennessy Very Special (VSOP)

This type of cognac has been aged for at least six years in Limousin oak casks that are made from wood cuttings left over from the wine industry – making them far more costly than standard barrels. It derives its flavor from being distilled twice – once like any other type of cognac and then again through a special process called “crystallization premiere.”

This ensures that it is at its very best when it reaches the consumer. As with many other types of cognac, it too tends to be best enjoyed neat or on the rocks after you have chilled it well.

How To Drink Cognac And The Different Ways You Can Enjoy It

By itself

Cognac neat or just by itself is perhaps the most common type of enjoying this particular drink. If you get to drink cognac neat or on the rocks, you can taste it in its purest form without having any additional flavor. This is how men usually enjoy their liquor, and this is also a very common way of taking your cognac if you are only entertaining yourself alone.

On the rocks

Drinking cognac with ice or putting a bit of ice into a glass of cognac is another popular way of enjoying your drink. It may not be as good as drinking it neat but adding some cubes of ice would make drinking cognac more enjoyable, especially when you are out in public places such as bars or restaurants.

You can add some water to give more volume to your drink while at the same time diluting its strength and taste.

With a mixer

Adding some cola, ginger ale, soda water, or fruit juice to your cognac is another way of enjoying this brandy. Mixers can make drinking cognac more fun and exciting as you will surely get to enjoy the new version of your drink.

Of course, those who do not like mixing their chocolates with other ingredients will be pleased to know that they can still enjoy their favorite drink in its purest form if they choose to take it alone on the rocks.

On the rocks and highball

If you love taking cognac on the rocks, then chances are you also love having it mixed with some cola or lemonade, especially during summertime, when these drinks can greatly quench your thirst.

You can even enjoy drinking cognac highball if you prefer a mixture of this type of drink with ginger ale or sprite. It is also a very cool way of making cognac, especially during the summer season.

With coffee

Drinking cognac with coffee after having breakfast or dinner is yet another intoxicating way of enjoying this beverage, especially if you are into sweet flavors and tastes. Adding an inch or two on the top of your cup of hot brewed java will give it more taste and flavor as well as quench your thirst each time you take a sip from it.

This is perhaps one of the most interesting ways to enjoy drinking cognacs, and people usually love doing this because, through it, they can get to enjoy two different types of drinks at the same time.
