According to the old Norse sagas, for Viking warriors, death was not an end but a glorious beginning. And it began with the Valkyries…
A Valkyrie in Norse folklore, was a female figure or soul who had the ability to pick which Viking warriors would die in battle. The divinely selected individuals would go to the afterlife or lobby of the killed, Valhalla which was ruled over by the mighty God, Odin. The Valkyries would recognize the most valiant of the fallen warriors by their strong Valknut tattoo. Death was a respect to Viking warriors – it was particularly observed by them as a start not an end
