Description
2018 marks the 25th anniversary of The Balvenie DoubleWood, aged 12 years. DoubleWood 12 was launched in 1993, using a process designed by our Malt Master David Stewart in 1982, now commonly known as ‘wood finishing’.
This milestone of reference isn't just a demonstration of the experts who have devoted their working lives to making Balvenie the handcrafted way but to the skill of our Malt Master who all through his 55 year career has changed the essence of Scotch, work which earned him a MBE in 2016.
Balvenie Doublewood 12 Year Scotch Whiskey was propelled in 1993, utilizing a procedure planned by our Malt Master David Stewart in 1982, now usually known as 'wood finishing'.
To make The Balvenie DoubleWood, David Stewart MBE takes whisky that has put in no less than 12 years in customary whisky cask, American Oak ex-bourbon barrels and hogsheads, and moves it to Spanish oak ex-Oloroso sherry casks for an extra nine months.
The whisky is then transferred to large oak vessels called "tuns" for 3-4 months to enable the whiskies from individual casks to "wed".
Balvenie Doublewood 12 Year Scotch Whiskey picks up its unmistakable character from being developed in two diverse wood composes. Each stage loans diverse characteristics to the resulting single malt whisky.
The customary casks mellow and include delicate character, the sherry wood brings depth and fullness of flavor and the last couple of months in our tuns enable the whiskies to wed amicably.
